4 government benefits for older Indians that every family should know about

When families first sit down to plan care for their parents, the conversation is usually about people: who will visit, who will call, who will be there in an emergency. The paperwork comes later, often in a hurry.

Yet some of the most useful support available to older Indians comes from government schemes that many families have never looked at. Here are four worth knowing about, what each offers, and how to check whether your parents are eligible. This is information to help you ask the right questions, not advice on what your family should choose.

1. Ayushman Vay Vandana card: hospital cover for everyone aged 70 and above

In 2024 the government extended Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, irrespective of income. Eligible seniors receive a separate card, the Ayushman Vay Vandana card.

  • Cover: up to ₹5 lakh a year for hospital treatment at empanelled public and private hospitals, on a family basis. Seniors in families already covered by PM-JAY get a top-up of up to ₹5 lakh a year for themselves.
  • Existing cover: seniors on CGHS, ECHS or CAPF schemes can choose between their existing scheme and PM-JAY. Those with private health insurance or ESI are also eligible.
  • How to enrol: through the Ayushman app, with Aadhaar-based eKYC, as this step-by-step guide explains. Aadhaar is the main document needed.

What is covered, and which hospitals take the card, depends on the scheme’s rules. Check with the hospital and the official scheme channels before relying on it, and speak to your parent’s doctor about any treatment.

2. Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS)

The SCSS is a government-backed savings scheme offered through post offices and authorised banks. According to SBI’s scheme page:

  • Who can open it: people aged 60 and above, and some retirees aged 55 to 60, subject to conditions.
  • How much: from ₹1,000 up to a maximum of ₹30 lakh.
  • For how long: five years, which can be extended by a further three.
  • Interest: paid every quarter, at a rate the government sets each quarter. For October to December 2026 it is 8.2% a year, unchanged from the previous quarter.
  • Early closure: allowed, with a penalty.

Whether the SCSS suits your parents depends on their wider finances, tax position and need for access to money. Take advice from a qualified financial adviser before investing.

3. Digital life certificate for pensioners

If your parent receives a pension, they will usually need to confirm each year that they are alive. This November, a nationwide campaign makes it possible from home using face authentication on a smartphone, or through doorstep service. We have written a full guide to the pension life certificate, with the four ways to submit it and what to keep ready.

4. Elderline 14567: a national helpline for senior citizens

Elderline is the national helpline for senior citizens, run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. It offers information and guidance on pension and legal issues, emotional support, and intervention in cases of abuse. Save 14567 in your parents’ phone, next to 112 for emergencies.

How to make these benefits work for your family

  • Make a one-page benefits sheet. List what each parent is enrolled in, card or account numbers (last four digits only), renewal dates and the official helpline for each.
  • Check eligibility once a year. Turning 70, retiring, or a change in pension can open up new benefits.
  • Use official channels only. Apply through official websites, apps, banks and post offices. Be cautious of anyone who charges a fee to “get” a government benefit or asks for OTPs.
  • Involve your parents. These are their benefits and their decisions. Go through them together.
