Pension life certificate: how to help your parents submit it this November

Every November, my phone fills up with the same question from families: “Has Papa done his life certificate yet?” It is a small task that carries a lot of weight. If it is missed, pension payments can be held up, and for a parent who lives alone or does not move around easily, a trip to the bank is no longer a small thing.

The good news is that it has become much easier. This guide explains what the certificate is, the four ways to submit it, what to keep ready, and how you can help, even if you live in another city.

What the life certificate is, and when it is due

A life certificate (often called Jeevan Pramaan) is an annual confirmation that a pensioner is alive, so that their pension can continue. Most pensioners submit it in November.

This year, the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare is running its fifth nationwide Digital Life Certificate campaign from 1 to 30 November 2026, in about 2,000 cities and districts, with banks, post offices and pensioners’ associations. The focus is on face authentication using a smartphone, with doorstep help where needed.

Under an existing government order, pensioners aged 80 and above can submit from 1 October, a month before everyone else, as this explainer on the 80-plus window describes.

Rules are not identical for every pension. Central and state government pensions, defence pensions, EPFO pensions and others can have different timelines and processes. The safest step is to confirm with the bank or office that pays your parent’s pension.

Four ways to submit it

  1. Face authentication on a smartphone. Using the Jeevan Pramaan face authentication app together with the Aadhaar Face RD service, a pensioner can submit a digital life certificate from home. It works on Android 10 or later and iOS 14 or later. Download apps only from the official app store, and see jeevanpramaan.gov.in for the official instructions.
  2. Doorstep service. India Post Payments Bank postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks offer doorstep digital life certificates, whichever bank the pension is paid through. Banks and campaign teams also provide doorstep help where needed. This is often the easiest option for a parent who cannot travel.
  3. At a bank branch, post office or camp. The pension-paying bank, a post office or a special campaign camp can take the certificate in person.
  4. On paper. The traditional paper certificate submitted at the pension-paying bank is still accepted. The digital route is an additional option, not a replacement.

What to keep ready

  • Aadhaar number, and the mobile number linked to it, since some steps use an OTP sent to that number.
  • Pension Payment Order (PPO) number. You will find it on the pension papers.
  • Bank account details of the account that receives the pension.
  • The name of the pension-sanctioning or disbursing authority (for example, the department or the bank).
  • A smartphone with a working front camera, if your parent will use face authentication, and good light on their face.

Keep copies of the PPO and bank details in the family documents folder we suggested in our checklist for families caring from another city. Never store PINs, passwords or OTPs in it.

How families can help, from anywhere

  • Put it in the calendar. Set a reminder for the first week of October (if your parent is 80 or older) or the first week of November.
  • Do it together the first time. A video call while your parent uses the app, or while the doorstep official visits, takes away most of the anxiety.
  • Keep the proof. After submitting, save the acknowledgement or certificate ID, and check with the bank that it has been received.
  • Book doorstep help early. If your parent cannot travel, request a doorstep visit early in the month rather than in the last week.
  • Watch the pension credit. If the pension does not arrive as expected afterwards, contact the bank promptly.

A word on fraud

Any deadline that involves pensions and bank accounts attracts fraudsters. Share these rules with your parents:

  • No genuine official will ask for an OTP, PIN, password or card number over the phone to “update” a life certificate.
  • Do not click links in messages that warn the pension will stop. Call the bank on a number you find yourself, such as the one on the passbook.
  • Install apps only from the official app store, never from a link someone sends.
  • If money has been lost, report it straight away on 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.
