On 29 October 2026, the Supreme Court took up the case of an elderly couple who lost more than \u20b91 crore to fraudsters using forged court orders. According to figures placed before the Court<\/a> from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and the Ministry of Home Affairs, 21,928 “digital arrest” complaints involving more than \u20b9647 crore were recorded on the national cybercrime portal in the first eight months of 2026 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind every one of those numbers is a person who was frightened, isolated and rushed. Very often, that person is someone’s parent. This guide explains how the scam works and the one conversation that protects your family best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How the scam works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. A call from an “official”.<\/strong> The caller says they are from the police, CBI, Enforcement Directorate, customs, a court or a regulator. On video, they may wear a uniform, sit in what looks like an office, and show official-looking letters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. A frightening accusation.<\/strong> A parcel in your name contained drugs, your Aadhaar was used for money laundering, or a case has been filed against you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Isolation.<\/strong> You are told you are under “digital arrest”, must stay on the video call, and must not tell anyone, sometimes for hours or even days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. The payment.<\/strong> To “clear your name” or have your money “verified”, you must transfer your savings to a “safe” or “government” account. Once sent, the money moves on within minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The one fact to share: there is no such thing as a digital arrest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    In his Mann Ki Baat address<\/a>, the Prime Minister put it plainly: no investigating agency will ever contact you by phone or video call for such an investigation, and there is no such thing as a “digital arrest”. The advice that goes with it is just as simple: stop, think, take action.<\/strong> The government’s cyber crime coordination centre has also advised<\/a> that genuine officials do not make demands over video calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Why older parents are targeted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Fraudsters look for people who respect authority, are at home during the day, and may live alone. Fear and shame do the rest: the victim is told not to tell anyone, so nobody gets the chance to say “this is a scam”. In one case reported in September 2026<\/a>, an 81-year-old businessman’s family discovered the fraud only during a visit home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
